CIS and VAT calculator
Enter your labour and materials to see VAT, reverse charge and the CIS deduction, and the amount you'll actually be paid.
A guide, not tax advice. VAT and CIS are rounded down to the penny.
How it works
VAT is worked out on labour and materials together. If the reverse charge applies, the VAT is shown but not added to what you're paid. CIS is then deducted from the labour only.
Frequently asked questions
How is CIS worked out?
CIS is a percentage of the labour part of the invoice: 20% if the subcontractor is CIS registered, 30% if not, 0% with gross payment status. Materials and VAT are not included.
When is VAT not added because of the reverse charge?
When a VAT-registered subcontractor does construction work for a VAT and CIS-registered contractor who isn't an end user. The VAT is shown but the contractor pays it to HMRC.
