A guide, not tax advice. VAT and CIS are rounded down to the penny.

## How it works

VAT is worked out on labour and materials together. If the [reverse charge](/guides/vat-reverse-charge-construction/) applies, the VAT is shown but not added to what you're paid. [CIS](/guides/cis-invoices/) is then deducted from the labour only.

## Frequently asked questions

How is CIS worked out?

CIS is a percentage of the labour part of the invoice: 20% if the subcontractor is CIS registered, 30% if not, 0% with gross payment status. Materials and VAT are not included.

When is VAT not added because of the reverse charge?

When a VAT-registered subcontractor does construction work for a VAT and CIS-registered contractor who isn't an end user. The VAT is shown but the contractor pays it to HMRC.
